Defino is a daily word game where you must guess an English word from its dictionary definition — but the definition has all its letters hidden, and you reveal them gradually. A new puzzle every day.

You are shown the length of the secret word and its dictionary definition, with every letter replaced by a black square.

Type a word of the same length as the secret word. Every letter you enter is revealed in the definition wherever it appears: the letters animate and unveil one by one, helping you understand what the word is.

Keep entering words, collecting clues letter by letter, until you can guess the secret word. The sooner the better. You have 6 attempts.

Used letters are highlighted on the keyboard to guide you. The behaviour depends on the selected mode.

Green mode (default): letters of the secret word are highlighted in green in the definition as you reveal them. On the keyboard, letters present in the secret word appear green; letters used but not in the word appear yellow. Note: Green letters are present in the secret word, but not necessarily in the same position as in the word you tried!

Black mode: the definition gives no colour feedback — blocks remain black throughout the game. On the keyboard, all used letters appear yellow, with no distinction. A harder challenge.

You can switch modes at any time using the button at the top left. Your choice is remembered for future games.

Stars are earned only by finding the word, and depend on the number of attempts used:

No stars if you run out of attempts or give up.
