fLemma is a portal of daily word games. Each day brings a new puzzle to test your vocabulary and reasoning. The English section currently features Defino, a word-guessing game based on dictionary definitions.

You are shown the length of a secret English word and its dictionary definition — but every letter in the definition is hidden. Type a word of the same length: the letters you enter are revealed wherever they appear in the definition. Keep going until you identify the secret word. You have six attempts.

Stars are earned only when you find the secret word. The fewer attempts you use, the more stars you get — up to five stars for guessing in one or two tries. No stars are given if you run out of attempts or give up.

Yes, a new Defino puzzle is published every day at midnight local time. You can also browse the archive to play previous days' puzzles at any time.

No registration needed. You can start playing right away, and your progress is saved automatically on your device. Note: clearing your browser cache will erase your game history and statistics. If you'd rather not risk losing anything, you can create a free account to sync your streaks and stats across devices.

With a free account, your streaks and statistics are synced across every device you sign in on, instead of being saved only locally in your browser. You can also customise an avatar, pick favourite games, and change your username or password from the Profile page.

To verify that the email address you entered is valid and really yours, we send a confirmation link after registration. Your account is created but not active until you click it, so you'll need to confirm it before you can log in.

From the Profile page you can customise your avatar's shape and colour, pick up to 6 favourite games to feature on the homepage, change your display name, and set or change your account password.

The timer tracks how long it takes you to complete each puzzle and is on by default for every player. If you'd rather play without seeing the clock, you can turn it off at any time from the navigation menu or from the Profile page (if you have an account).

Yes. Each game has its own leaderboard for winning streaks and completion times, shown right on the game's page. There's also a global Flemma Streak leaderboard that combines streaks across all games, which you'll find on the homepage and on the Statistics page, alongside other aggregated stats about your games.
